Cycling

Camping Las Dunas is an excellent destination for campers who like cycling. We have our own wikiloc page where you can share GPS tracks. We invite all cyclists to share their routes here. At the reception we have a map with cycle routes. In recent years we have also started organized cycling tours with a guide that shows you all the good spots in the area.

The landscape that surrounds Camping Las Dunas is flat and therefore very suitable for families with children. A nice and easy route leads from the campsite through the nature park to Sant Pere Pescador. First you cycle through orchards and along the dunes to the bank of the river Fluvià and then along the river to the town. There is no motorised traffic and the route is around 12 km there and back.

Another nice and easy route leads from the campsite in the opposite direction to l’Escala. The first km is along the road, but a narrow bicycle track is marked. After this initial part the route gets better and leads away from the road to the medieval village of Sant Martí d’Empúries. From here a beautiful wide boulevard, free of motorised traffic, leads to the centre of l’Escala. There and back is also around 12 km.

More sporty cyclists can go north beyond Sant Pere pescador towards the mountains of the Cap de Creus which you reach at around 20km from Camping Las Dunas. A great ride for road bikes of approximately 80km first climbs the road from Roses to Cadaqués, then descends into Port de la Selva, before ascending again to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and finally descending back towards Camping las Dunas

In the southern direction you can cycle on behind l’Escala towards the Montgrí Nature Park. Here there are no paved roads, only dirt tracks. Therefore this is a great area for mountain bikers.

D.O. Empordà Wine Cellars

Camping Las Dunas is located at the beach of the Bay of Rosas in the region called Alt Empordà which happens to be an excellent wine making region. The knowledge about wine producing was introduced in the area by the Greeks when they founded Emporion in the 6th century B.C. Documentation exists that suggests the presence of wine from the Empordà region in Rome itself only 4 centuries later. In the middle ages the monks of Sant Pere de Rodes became true experts in viticulture, which is the art of Grape Growing. Along with other monasteries in the region they transformed the landscape by building terraces and dry stone walls to improve grape vine cultivation. In the 18th and 19th century wine production reached its peak and was even the main agricultural activity in the region. Unfortunately the phylloxera plague put an abrupt end to this when it arrived in 1879 in a vineyard in Rabós d’Empordà. The restart was difficult and vineyards never covered the same surface area again.

The tramuntana, a strong and fresh northern wind favours viticulture in the Empordà. The climate in the region in general is favourable with little frost in winter and summer temperatures tempered by the sea breeze. The wine production in the region is regulated since 1975 by the Denominacion de Origen or D.O. Empordà which is the common Spanish classification system for wines. Currently the D.O. Empordà consists of 40 wine cellars that produce an average of 6.5 million litres of wine on an area of approximately 2000 hectares. All wines are produced, 60% of them are red wines. The most common grapes are Garnatxa (Grenache), Samsó (Carignan) and Moscat d’Alexandria (Muscat). A local specialty is the Garnatxa de l’Empordà, a sweet wine made of the grape with the same name. In recent years many cellars have opened their doors to the public and organise guided visits, wine tasting and direct sales. For more information you can consult the D.O.Empordà’s website.

Surf

In 2017 we have reformed our surf school entirely. A young couple, Pilar and Hug, are managing the school under the name “Fase Wind”. They built a new shop with material for rent and for sale and set up a nice chill out area with barbecue. There is a covered storage area for private material that our camping guests can use for free. Fase Wind offers courses for all levels in windsurf, dinghy sailing, paddle surf and much more. More information on Fase Wind’s facebook site:

All surfers have to respect a safety distance of 100 meters from the beach for swimmers. This distance is marked by yellow buoys in the summer. To enter the water there are two channels, likewise marked by yellow buoys, one near the surf school at the “B-area” and another one at the beach exit near the “F-area”. For kite surfers there are areas close to the campsite on the beaches of Les Botigues and Cinc Claus, but on the beach in front of the campsite kite surfing is not allowed.
